Rowing with the Tigers: 1st Regatta of Fall 2017

Clemson, S.C. - This past Saturday, the Masters and Junior level men and women of Peachtree City Rowing Club traveled to Clemson, South Carolina to kick off the Fall 2017 racing season. The Tail of the Tiger Head Race was held on Lake Hartwell right on Clemson University’s campus. Each race was 5000m total. The team came home with 8 first place finishes, 2 second place finishes, and 1 third place finish.

The team all smiles after a victorious day of racing.

The morning started out with Masters Rower Megan Gradek, who took 1st place in the Women’s Open 1x with a (22:42.00) finish, beating 2nd place by a whopping (05:37.00). Gradek said it was a great race to practice for the Head of the Charles, where she will be competing again in the Women’s Masters 1x event. Lake Hartwell’s 5000m race course has 2 sharp turns that make steering a bit of a challenge.

Starting just 10 minutes after Gradek, the Women’s Junior Open 2x, Jocalyn Ortega stroking, and Kellie Harmon in bow. The ladies took 1st place out of 3 in the event by (01:29.00). Ortega and Harmon would later go on to race in the Women’s Junior Varsity 8+. The Women’s Junior Varsity 4+ finished in 1st place with a time of (26:10.00).

The MVB (Most Valuable Boat) of the day goes to the Women’s Junior Varsity 8+. There was no other boats entered in the original event, so the coaches made a special request to the regatta hosts. After being given permission, it was decided to place the ladies in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 8+ event. The ladies brought some serious heat to the course, and gave the college women a run for their money. With a 1st place finish, the junior level women beat 5 college level boats, finishing (01:29.00) ahead of 2nd place Clemson.

The Men’s Junior 4+ had a successful first day of racing, placing 1st out of 4 in their event. They finished in (22:36.00) beating 2nd place by (00:14.00).
